Paul Lung is a painter well known for his spectacular graphite pencil drawing skills in not only Asia but all the way to Europe.

I guess it is quite common that a painter starts drawing objects/ people that they are familiar with. For me, I enjoy drawing my cats the most as they are the ones I am most familiar with.
2. How did you develop your painting skills if you
have never had painting classes?
When I was a kid, there were not many extra-curricular courses, if we want to learn, we borrow books
from the library and learn by ourselves. Back then,
when the society has less temptations and the internet was not as flourished as nowadays, we were
dedicated to what we passionate about.
3. Are there any specific reasons why you use
graphite pencil as your main tool to draw?
I tried all kind of tools and medium—watercolour, oil
paint, pastel, etc. In 2004, I started graphite pencil
painting. Due to space restriction at home, I thought
graphite pencil is the best choice since it does not
take up much spaces and is very convenient to get
my hands on. But as I got used to graphite pencil, I
started to realise that it is quite interesting to explore
the possibilities—different textures and dimensions—of graphite pencil.
graphite pencil and sign pen? What do you enjoy
painting the most?
Frankly speaking, I have come to a stage where I no
longer classify whether I am drawing a human or an
object because you can give life to an object regardless of its nature. So, I would say I enjoy painting
both equally. The major difference between graphite
pencil and sign pen is that the former usually takes
longer to draw where the later is good for quick
sketches.
5. As a painter, what do you think about people in
Hong Kong’s attitude towards art and painting?
I think that things in Hong Kong are too commercialised and trend-oriented. Not only paintings but also
other forms of art. It seems like that people may
have forgotten the nature of art. Case in point,
whenever there is an art exhibition in Hong Kong, it
will be full of people. But do they go there because
they appreciate art or even like art? I wonder. I think
people go there merely because they want to take
photos and upload on social media. On a different
note, another problem that Hong Kong people have
with art is that the pace of living is too fast, too fast
that we do not have the leisure to appreciate art
properly.

6. Which is your favourite work by far?
To be honest, I do not have a favourite yet. Every time I finish drawing, I will stare at the work for 1-2 hours and
will find out things that I can do even better. That is why I cannot pick one as a favourite.
7. Have you struggled when you have decided to be a full time painter? And what makes you so decisive?
Yes, I did. I used to be one of those workaholics who work more than 20 hours per day. But I knew from the
beginning, that all the efforts I have put in, are for a reason. Although I was once struggled, my aspiration is
clear. The reason why I worked so hard in the previous years is because I want to do what I really enjoy doing in
the future.

8. If you are a fashion designer instead of business design consultant, what do you want to design?
To me, I would like to try designing graphics and patterns on T-shirt.
9. What are the 3 staples that you cannot live without in your wardrobe?
A basic plain T-shirt, a causal pair of pants and a thin cardigan.
10. If opportunities come up, would you be interested to collaborate with fashion brands featuring your
paintings?
Earlier, I put more than 20 quick sketches of cat into a collage. When I look at it, I really hope that it can become
a print on a tote bag or a scarf.
11. Do you have any advice for painters out there who want to pursue their own dreams like you do?
As I am still finding my way to success, it would be hard for me to give any advices. But from what I have learnt
from friends who succeeded, I would say, do whatever brings you genuine happiness.
